About IBIS
The International Chess Tournament for the Visually Impaired & Handicapped, or IBIS in Dutch (Internationaal Blinden Integratie Schaaktoernooi) is a unique event organised by volunteers.
Over 30 years chess players from Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and The Netherlands have gathered in Haaksbergen to play in this annual tournament, a tournament not only known for its friendly competition and friendship but also an engagement between those who are visually impaired and those who are not.
All are cordially invited to attend the IBIS Tournament either as a contestant or a spectator. The IBIS Board is also looking for volunteers to assist in the organisation and execution of the event, for instance acting as a host family or assisting players throughout the weekend as and when required. If you are interested you can contact us.
Lodging
Most players from outside Haaksbergen will be offered an opportunity to stay with families who live in and around Haaksbergen. These host families are an important and essential element of the event and add an extra element of integration. Some of these families have supported the IBIS Tournament since inception by hosting players and those who assist them. This has lead to close friendships cutting across many boundaries between hosts and guests.
The IBIS Tournament organisation is always looking for new host families, if you are interested please contact us.
Alternatively, players could stay in some of the hotels that Haaksbergen has on offer.
Competition Timing & Organisation
The IBIS Tournament tends to take place annually during the second last weekend of April. Three rounds of chess are played during the competition, namely on Saturday morning and afternoon and the subsequent Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon is reserved for the closing ceremony, which includes handing out the official prizes.
Each match takes a maximum of three hours and a clock is being used to stay within this time limit. When a player’s time is up, i.e. when the flag falls, he or she has lost the match by default.
Attendance is open to chess players of all levels however assignment to different player pools is done on the basis of player’s experience.
Social Events
Although the chess competition is taken very seriously, the social aspect is an important part of the IBIS Tournament. On Friday evening there is the ‘Schaak-Inn’, which offers all participants an opportunity to reconnect with their friends and get to know the new players. On Saturday evening there is an event with music and dance to which all are invited, including the host families.
Of course, after each of the matches there is ample time to reflect on the outcome and an opportunity to get to know the fellow players a bit better or catch up with old friends.
